"Doesn't our ERP already do this?" is the first question almost every plant asks when MES comes up, and it's a fair one — a modern ERP is a genuinely large system, and it often does have a manufacturing module. The honest answer is that ERP and MES are built to answer different questions, at different points in the process, and the confusion usually costs someone a budget cycle before it gets sorted out.
What ERP is built to do
Enterprise resource planning software exists to plan and account for the business as a whole: sales orders, procurement, inventory valuation, finance, and — as part of that — a production plan. It answers questions like what needs to be made, by when, from what materials, and at what cost. That plan is created ahead of time, often days or weeks before the work starts, and it's built for planning accuracy and financial reporting, not for capturing what happens minute to minute on a specific line.
What MES is built to do
A manufacturing execution system exists to capture and manage what actually happens during production, as it happens: which unit is at which station, which operator executed it, what measurements were taken, what got flagged and reworked. It's built for the shift, not the quarter — live enough that a supervisor can act on it before the shift ends, and precise enough that a QA lead can trace a single unit's history months later.
Where the two meet
In practice, the systems hand off to each other rather than compete. Work orders and routings flow from the ERP into the MES so execution starts from the same plan everyone else is working to. As units move through stations, the MES captures the real record — completions, quality results, scrap, downtime — and feeds confirmations back to the ERP so financials and inventory reflect what actually happened, not the plan. Neither system needs to pretend to be the other for this to work.
Do you need a full ERP-MES integration to start?
No — and this is where a lot of plants stall out waiting for an IT project that never gets prioritised. Work orders can be planned directly in an MES and reconciled against the ERP later, or exported in a format the ERP team can load in on their own schedule. The floor doesn't need to wait for a live API connection to get real visibility; the two systems can sync on a cadence that fits how your team actually works.
